Dextromethorphan Lessens Pain After Bone/Soft Tissue Malignancy Surgery

Use of dextromethorphan reduces post-surgical pain intensity as well as sedation and analgesic requirements in patients undergoing surgery for bone and soft tissue malignancies.

Three-day administration of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist does not increase the incidence of side effects or accelerate ambulation and discharge home, Israeli researchers report.

Investigators from Tel Aviv University point out the effects of pre-incision oral dextromethorphan on post-operative pain and intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) morphine (MO) have already been demonstrated in surgical patients.
