Synovial Fluid Chondroitin Sulphates As Marker May Be Affected By Age And Gender

Use of synovial fluid chondroitin sulphates as a marker for arthritic conditions may be affected by age and gender.

 Yoshihito Nakayama, Daini Hospital, in Kanagawa, Japan, and colleagues investigated whether age and gender can influence the ratio and concentrations of chondroitin sulfates in the synovial fluid of 82 healthy volunteers.

The researchers measured the concentrations of chondroitin 6-sulfate, chondroitin 4-sulfate, and hyaluronic acid in the subjects, who were 20 to 79 years of age. They found that the concentrations of chondroitin sulfates and hyaluronic acid varied with age.

So too did the ratio between chondroitin 6- and chondroitin 4-sulfates. Concentrations of the chondroitin sulfates were highest in patients between 20 and 30 years of age, and decreased with age, the investigators reported.
