Provision of parental nutrition during hemodialysis (IDPN) reverses the catabolic state induced by the dialysis, resulting in an anabolic state in patients on chronic hemodialysis (CHD) therapy, researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center report.
Dr. T. Alp Ikizler and associates, based in Nashville, Tennessee, conducted a randomized crossover study with seven chronic hemodialysis patients who appeared to be adequately nourished, nondiabetic, and free of acute inflammation and anemia. They used precise stable isotope infusion techniques while a mixture of amino acids, dextrose and lipids was infused.
