More than a third of patients who receive a continent urinary stoma experience stoma-related complications, according to a recent report by Belgian investigators. However, most of these complications are easy to manage.
Dr. Piet Hoebeke and colleagues, from Ghent University Hospital, assessed the outcomes of 53 patients who underwent creation of a continent urinary stoma.
In almost all cases, the indication for surgery was the presence of a neuropathic bladder. Most of the stomas were the Mitrofanoff vesicostomy type. The mean follow-up period was 2.8 years.
