NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Sept 09 –
The same immunologic parameters that are altered in depressed adults are affected in depressed adolescents, but the pattern of alterations differs between the two groups, according to a report in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for September.
Dr. Steven J. Schleifer, of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, and associates conducted immune assays and functional measures of immunity in 36 adolescents (ages 14 to 20) diagnosed with major depression and 36 control subjects matched for gender, age and racial background. The depressed subjects were otherwise healthy and were medication-free.
