Osteoporosis Risk May Be Raised By GnRH Agonist Therapy In Some Women

Doctors should be cautious about using GnRH agonist treatment for endometriosis in women who have not yet attained peak bone mineral density.

 This warning is the result of a study on the impact of six months of GnRH agonist therapy for this condition from the Burns and Allen Research Institute, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, University of California-Los Angeles School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California, United States.

 In some women, GnRH agonist therapy could increase risk for osteoporosis later in life, suggests Dr S K Agarwal from the institute’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Objective of this study was two-fold: to determine if there is an age-related effect on bone mineral density (BMD) loss with this treatment for endometriosis and, in particular, whether the impact of the therapy in terms of BMD loss is different if it is used prior to attainment of peak BMD rather than after.
