The risk of neonatal death after home birth, or after birth at a hospital following urgent transfer from home, is almost twice as high as after planned hospital birth, according to a review of data from Washington State birth certificates from 1989 to 1996 published in the August issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
But “more light needs to be shed on this controversial topic,” the investigators caution. They believe that expectant parents cannot be fairly counseled about the safety of home births until observational studies accurately assess intention to deliver at home, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and confounding factors
