Carbohydrates May Be Cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The complex carbohydrates glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) may be the trigger for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to a Harvard researcher.

 Dr. Julia Ying Wang observed that GAGs compose much of the body’s connective tissue and are also found in synovial fluid.

According to her theory, RA occurs because certain cells bind specifically to GAGs, leading to joint inflammation and pain. The Harvard Medical School assistant professor reported her findings here Wednesday at the American Chemical Society’s annual meeting.
