A single 40 mg IV dose of parecoxib sodium followed by up to seven days of oral valdecoxib results in significant opioid-sparing effects starting immediately following laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery.
Harold Minkowitz, MD, Memorial Hermann-Memorial City Hospital in Houston, Texas presented the findings from the multi-center, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on August 20th at the 10th World Congress on Pain (WCP).
All patients received standard of care fentanyl on demand for pain during the immediate postoperative period and acetaminophen 500 mg/hydrocodone 5 mg orally every four to six hours, as required, following discharge for up to day 7 post surgery.
The active arm also received parecoxib 40 mg IV administered 30 to 45 minutes preoperatively and valdecoxib 40 mg orally once daily beginning six to 12 hours post surgery and continuing to day 7. The comparator arm received placebo matched for parecoxib and valdecoxib.
