Multifaceted Intervention to Support Diabetic Treatment Cost Effective

A multifaceted intervention to support diabetic treatment guidelines at an academic family practice clinic improved patients’ glycaemic control without increasing health care costs. That was the finding of a controlled clinical trial conducted by researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, in the United States.

The trial compared a multifaceted intervention versus usual care for managing diabetes at an academic family practice clinic. Providers who conducted the intervention received didactic training and computerized, compliance feedback to support staged diabetes management, which is an evidenced-based approach to diabetes care, the researchers said.

One firm of the clinic practice received the intervention, while the other served as the control group during a 14-month baseline period and a 14-month study period. Patients’ HbA1c values were the principal outcome measure. The researchers found a significant difference in HbA1c values (0.71 percent) between the intervention and control firms. The subgroup with the greatest improvement in HbA1c were subjects who started the intervention with HbA1c above 8 percent, the researchers found.
