Survival Unaffected by Treatment Delay for Low-Risk Endometrial Cancer


NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 25 – Investigators in Scotland report the paradoxical finding that women with endometrial cancer whose treatment is delayed the longest are more likely to survive than their counterparts. According to comments in the British Medical Journal for July 27, this conundrum is related to general practitioners (GPs) who alert specialists to more advanced disease, thus accelerating definitive treatment.

Dr. Simon C. Crawford, of Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow, and colleagues analyzed case notes on 703 women diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 1996 and 1997. The median interval from referral to a specialist to definitive surgery was 62 days, with a 90th percentile cutoff of 150 days
