Galantamine Slows Cognitive Decline of Alzheimer’s Disease

The benefits of galantamine (Reminyl) in slowing cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease appear to be sustained for at least 3 years, according to study results presented here Wednesday at the 8th International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders.

Dr. Gordon Wilcock of the University of Bristol, UK, and Dr. Luc Truyen from Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, which markets the drug, gave patients galantamine for a total of 36 months and measured changes in cognitive function from baseline.

The study was an open-label continuation of two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. A total of 491 patients enrolled at the beginning of the research, 64% of whom completed the extended phases of the trials.
