Bcl-2 Expression May Regulate Cholangioles Growth in Chronic Hepatitis

In chronic hepatitis, the oncoprotein encoded by bcl-2 might regulate the growth of cholangioles of the interface area. Researchers from University of Patras, Greece, assessed bcl-2 gene expression in 10 liver biopsies from patients with acute lobular hepatitis, 50 from subjects with chronic hepatitis and 10 controls.

The bcl-2 gene encodes proteins that regulate apoptosis. As such, bcl-2 gene expression confers a survival benefit to cells that proliferate rapidly. Patients were infected with either hepatitis B or C.

The HAI grade for chronic hepatitis ranged from 3/18 to 15/18. The stage varied from one to six.
