Increased Antithrombin Activity, Decreased Platelet Function in Head Injuries

The expression on monocytes of tissue factor, a potent procoagulant induced by trauma, is attenuated within 24 hours of head injury.

This attenuation parallels an increase in antithrombin and a decline in platelet function after head injury.

The correlation of tissue factor expression with platelet-monocyte binding suggests that platelet binding may lead to monocyte activation, say investigators at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center, and the Sacramento Medical Foundation Blood Centers, Sacramento, California, United States.
