Prolongation of cardiopulmonary bypass is related to increasing degrees of platelet dysfunction.
Reduction in platelet contractile force is related to decreases in platelet adhesion receptors and early postoperative blood loss. These were the key findings of a study by Dr. Philip Greilich, of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, and colleagues.
They studied correlations between alterations in platelet function with the duration of bypass and early postoperative blood loss in 30 patients.
