– A round-table of experts led by Germany’s Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) on Monday issued a set of guidelines designed to make tanning salons safer. Wolfram Koenig, head of the BfS, noted Monday at a press conference in Berlin that the tanning salon industry in Germany is currently unregulated and poses serious health risks.
In a written statement, Koenig said the new guidelines call for uniform standards for tanning beds, regular inspections, the ability to adjust the UV rays according to skin types, and an emergency shut-off switch that can easily be reached by the user of a tanning bed. Additionally, personnel at tanning salons need to be trained so they can develop individualized plans for various skin types.
The panel that developed the guidelines was formed late last year. Members included experts from dermatological, cancer and photobiology associations, as well as an association of tanning bed manufacturers.
