Smoking Activates Mast Cells In Basal Cell Carcinoma

Cigarette smoking can play a key role in the differentiation of basal cell carcinoma towards its sclerosing form. This occurs through a rise in the numbers of peri-tumoural mast cells, suggest researchers in Gaziantep, Turkey.

 They noted that the stroma of basal cell carcinoma is rich in mast cells and that morpheaform basal cell carcinoma had been reported to contain many more mast cells than the other types of basal cell carcinoma.

 However, the researchers pointed out, the pathogenesis and clinical relevance of this were unclear. It had recently been suggested that smoking and ultraviolet exposure might be related to the development of morpheaform basal cell carcinoma.
