Intranasal glucocorticoids are more effective in seasonal allergic rhinitis than an antileukotriene drug or a combination of antileukotriene/antihistamine drugs.
Glucocorticoids control nasal symptoms better and reduce pollen-induced nasal eosinophilic inflammation. Researchers from Goteborg University in Sweden and the University of Tartu in Estonia point out allergic rhinitis requires active intervention to bring patients symptom relief.
Their double-blind, randomised study of 62 patients evaluated how use of a combination of antileukotriene and antihistamine drugs compared with a nasal glucocorticoid. Participants all had grass pollen-induced allergic rhinitis. They received a nasal glucocorticoid, an antileukotriene, a combination of antileukotriene and antihistamine or placebo throughout the allergy season. They were asked to record symptoms.
