Low Fertility Rate Seen in Women With Psychotic Disorders

Women with psychotic disorders have substantially lower fertility rates compared with healthy women, according to a report in the June issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. This is especially true in women with nonaffective disorders.

Dr. Louise Michele Howard and colleagues from King’s College, London, UK, examined the general fertility rate and age-specific fertility rates for women with psychotic disorders and age-matched, normal controls. They reviewed patient records for 7936 women with psychotic disorders and 23,023 controls between the ages of 15 and 44 years.

The researchers observed a lower overall general fertility rate among the women with psychotic disorders compared to the control subjects. They note, however, that fertility was only significantly lower in women who were 25 years and older.
