Geographic Gap in Male Suicide Rates in US Continues to Widen

Men in rural areas are increasingly more likely to commit suicide than their urban counterparts, new study findings suggest.

 “The widening gap in suicide between rural and urban areas is definitely alarming,” Dr. Gopal K. Singh of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland told Reuters Health. Dr. Singh and co-author Dr. Mohammad Siahpush, with the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria, Australia, investigated the differences in rural and urban suicides in the United States by analyzing government data on over 3103 counties in the US.

 Suicides were generally most common among men in rural versus urban areas, particularly during the most recent years, the researchers report in the July issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
