Widespread Coronary Inflammation Seen in Unstable Angina

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 03 –

 In patients with unstable angina, the entire coronary tree appears to be inflamed–not just the vascular bed of the culprit stenosis. Therefore, treatments focusing on just the single plaque may not address the whole problem, according to a report published in the July 4th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Attilio Maseri, from San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy, and colleagues assessed neutrophil activation in blood samples from 59 patients with angina and from six control subjects. In each subject, blood samples were taken from the aorta, the femoral vein, and the great cardiac vein, “which selectively drains blood from the left but not the right coronary artery.”.
