Long-term outcome in renal transplant is not influenced by coexistent hepatitis B and C in the recipient, researchers from India report.
Dr. J. R. Rathod and colleagues from the P. D. Hinduja National Hospital in Mumbai, India studied the outcome of renal transplant in 35 hepatitis-positive recipients.
A total of 245 adults with end-stage renal disease received renal transplant in their center during the study period from 1989 to 2000, the researchers report. Twelve patients were positive for hepatitis B, 18 for hepatitis C, and 5 patients tested positive for both viruses, the researchers report in the June issue of the Journal of the Association of Physicians of India.
Standard protocols were followed prior to, during and posttransplant. Patients who tested positive for hepatitis B and hepatitis C pretransplant were administered lamivudine and ribavirin respectively, they add.
