Family Doctors Better Than Surgeons at Breaking Bad News

Family doctors are better than surgeons at breaking bad news, according to a survey of patients published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

The research looked at 106British patients’ experiences during diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Patients were asked to grade their experiences from “positive” to “very negative,” and to nominate the most and least helpful doctors they had seen. Of the 13 doctors categorised as “most helpful” when breaking bad news, eight were family doctors.

Of the seven categorised as “less helpful,” all were surgeons. Among the “very negative” experiences, one woman who was seen by a surgeon after having a lump removed from her breast remembered being told that she had cancer across her chest. When she started crying, he told her, “stop that, you have a lot more to go through.”
