Added Echocardiograph Measurements Could Improve Congestive Heart Failure Prognosis

Pseudonormal mitral filling pattern predicts hospital re-admission in older patients with

congestive heart failure.

Measuring the combined endpoint of death and congestive heart failure hospital admission might provide important prognostic information in a wide range of patients with congestive heart failure, say researchers in Auckland, New Zealand. It would be easy to add measurement of these variables to routine clinical echocardiography, the researchers added.

They noted that among older hospital patients with congestive heart failure, pseudonormal filling leads to much the same admission rates as patients with restrictive filling. The researchers reported a study in which the combined endpoint of death and congestive heart failure hospital admission was similar for restrictive filling and abnormal relaxation.
