NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 18 –
Despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroids, lung function in chronic asthmatics appears to decline sharply, and then continues to decline over time, according to Japanese researchers.
Dr. Hirokazu Taniguchi of Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University and colleagues
note that most studies documenting the decline of lung function in asthmatics were published before the introduction of inhaled corticosteroids.
To determine the long-term effect of such treatment, the researchers monitored forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in 49 asthmatics who had previously not received inhaled corticosteroids. The findings appeared in the May issue of the Journal of Asthma.
