Low Plasma Vitamin C Linked With Increased Stroke Risk in Men

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 11 –

The results of a study published in the June issue of Stroke suggest that low plasma vitamin C may be associated with an increased risk of stroke in middle-aged men.

 In a 10.4-year prospective, population-based cohort study, Dr. J. T. Salonen and colleagues from the University of Kuopio, Finland, evaluated the relationship between plasma

vitamin C levels and stroke risk in middle-aged men with no history of stroke at baseline.

 They also examined whether plasma vitamin C modifies the association between obesity and hypertension. Of 2419 men, 120 developed a stroke. Ninety-six of these strokes were ischemic and 24 were hemorrhagic.
