Increased Glomerular Protein Ultrafiltration May Cause Greater Protein Excretion In Essential Hypertension

The increase in protein excretion in essential hypertension could be due, at least in part, to an increase in glomerular protein ultrafiltration.

Researchers at St George’s Hospital Medical School, London, England, suggest this possibility after examining the association between urinary protein and blood pressure and comparing the pattern of urinary protein excretion with essential hypertension in black and white people.

The blacks were of African or African-Caribbean origin while the whites were of European origin and black people. Both of the studied groups lived in London. In the groups as a whole, the researchers found no significant differences between blacks and whites in either total urinary protein excretion or in urinary albumin. But members of both groups with essential hypertension showed significantly raised urinary protein excretion. It was 1.21 times higher with the blacks and 1.19 times higher with the whites.
