Family Doctors Need Access to Education, Specialists When Managing Musculoskeletal Conditions

Family doctors are confident about managing most musculoskeletal conditions provided they have access to appropriate education, specialist support for complex cases, physiotherapy support and multidisciplinary management for pain control.

Questionnaires were sent to 446 general practitioners in the Sheffield and Barnsley areas of England, and 53.8 percent responded. Semistructured interviews of a sample of 10 doctors were also analysed. C. Roberts and colleagues from the University of Sheffield and Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, did the study to determine the support service family doctors need when working with patients with musculoskeletal problems, and to identify their educational needs in terms of delivering improved service.

Most doctors are confident managing entirely on their own such common conditions as gout (86 percent of those in this study), back pain (69 percent), osteoarthritis (62 percent) and sporting injuries (58 percent). However, despite high levels of confidence in diagnosing non-specific pain syndromes, 68 percent would refer to a rheumatologist.
