Hamstring Tendons Produce Good Results In Cruciate Surgery

Orthopedic surgeons say that using hamstring tendons to repair serious cruciate ligament injuries produces good results after two years of follow up.

A team of surgeons from the department of orthopedic surgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, said that “keyhole” surgery using a four-stranded hamstring tendon graft produced acceptable results in treating posterior cruciate ligament injuries.

 The technique was used on a series of 30 patients, 27 of whom were available for the final outcome analysis.

When the patients were assessed at follow-up, 89 percent showed good or excellent results on the Lysholm knee rating, while 56 percent of patients in the series had 3 to 5mm ligament laxity measured by the International Knee Documentation Committee scores. Four patients

(15 percent) had grade II laxity.
