Sildenafil Effective for SSRI-Induced Sexual Dysfunction in Men

PHILADELPHIA, PA — May 24, 2002 —

Sildenafil is a safe and effective treatment for SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction in men, researchers reported here Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

“We found that sildenafil, or Viagra, is an effective antidote to sexual dysfunction caused by serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Those are the very commonly used antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and a few others.

Sexual dysfunction is a very common side effect. The bottom line is that this side effect prevents people from taking the medication they need,” said co-researcher Patrick Ying, MD, clinical instructor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 23 men, ages 30-64 years, with clinically recovered mood or anxiety disorder (HAM-D score less than 17) and SSRI-associated sexual dysfunction. The investigators randomised 11 men to sildenafil 50 mg to 100 mg and 12 to placebo for eight weeks.
