Thin-Section Helical CT Detects Urinary Tract Calculi in Children

NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 30 — Authors of a retrospective review published in the May issue of Pediatric Radiology favor computed tomography (CT) over intravenous urography to detect urinary tract calculi, but they recommend additional studies.
"Non-contrast thin section helical CT is a useful method to diagnose urinary tract calculi in children," write Peter J. Strouse, MD, from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and colleagues. "Further research is needed to optimize CT imaging parameters, while maintaining diagnostic accuracy and minimizing radiation dose."

A search of radiology databases at 3 pediatric institutions identified 113 children evaluated by "renal stone" protocol CT scans. These children had 137 such scans, which used no oral or intravenous contrast and covered the entire urinary tract in helical mode with narrow collimation (<5 mm).
