Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery done on the beating heart reduces the risk of short-term complications, without compromising outcome, compared with conventional bypass surgery.
"CABG surgery on the beating heart is gaining popularity, however until now there has been a lack of evidence that it improves outcome," declares Dr Gianni Angelini and colleagues at the Bristol Heart Institute, Bristol Royal Infirmary, University of Bristol, Bristol, England.
As CABG surgery on the beating heart (off-pump surgery) is on the increase in restoring coronary artery blood flow as an alternative to conventional heart bypass (on-pump surgery), the researchers analysed pooled data from two randomised trials which compared the short- and mid-term outcomes associated with off-pump and on-pump surgery.
