Lower birthweight may be associated with greater subcutaneous and abdominal fatness in adulthood.
Lower birthweight is also related to reduced adult lean body mass, Belgian researchers report. Their study of female twin pairs indicates birthweight accounts for some of the differences in body composition seen in adult twins. The investigators, from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, also concluded that the intrauterine environment is critical for adult height.
Four hundred and forty seven twin pairs were randomly selected for study from the East Flanders Prospective Twin Survey. This survey is a population-based register of all twins born in the Belgian province of East Flanders since 1964. It is known for its prospectively collected perinatal data and accurate zygosity determination.
Zygosity is determined through sequential analysis based on sex, foetal membranes, umbilical cord blood groups, placental alkaline phosphatase and DNA fingerprints.
