SAN DIEGO, CA — March 19, 2002 — Pain control and physical therapy is hampered by too early transition from epidural analgesia to oxycodone pills, suggest results presented here on Sunday, March 17 at the 76th Clinical and Scientific Congress of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).
Dr. Asokumar Buvanendran of Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, described the results of a study of 390 patients who had total knee arthroplasty. The patients included those who received postoperative epidural analgesia during the six months before and after the college's hospital implemented a protocol of early transition to controlled-release oxycodone. Gender makeup did not differ between the two groups nor did age of the patients.
