Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements fail to prevent migraine

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Contrary to two previous reports, the results of a new study by French researchers show that adding supplemental omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (OPFA) to the diet does not prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks.

Dr. A. Pradalier from the Hפpital Louis Mourier, Colombes, and colleagues randomly assigned patients to placebo or to 6 gm/day Maxepa, an OPFA supplement, for 16 weeks, after a 4-week placebo run-in period. After 16 weeks of placebo or OPFA treatment, there was 4-week placebo run-out period.

During the 6 months of the trial, the number of migraines between the groups were significantly different, with 7.05 migraines among the 87 patients in the placebo group and 5.95 migraines among the 96 patients in the OPFA group (p = 0.036).

However, during the 4-month OPFA treatment phase, the mean number of migraine attacks was not significantly different between the groups, at 1.20 in the OPFA group and 1.26 in the placebo group, the researchers found.

There was also no significant difference between the groups in mean intensity, mean duration, and the use of rescue medication, according to the report in the October issue of Cephalalgia.

"Despite a run-in placebo period of 1 month, a very strong placebo effect was observed in this trial: 45% reduction of the attacks between run-in and 4-month treatment period (55% in the OPFA group, p = 0.058)," Dr. Pradalier and colleagues note.

The researchers conclude that the "study fails to show…a significant difference [in the number of attacks] compared with placebo and we did not find the positive results demonstrated on a small number of patients by the two previous studies."
