British study details new breast cancer treatment

CHICAGO (Reuters) – A new technique may allow women in the early stages of breast cancer to complete treatment in one session, without the 6 weeks or more of daily radiation therapy now required, researchers reported on Monday.

The technique involves lumpectomy followed by temporary insertion of a metal sphere into the cavity to provide radiation therapy to the breast tissue from the inside out.

The technique, being developed at University College London Medical School, was outlined in a presentation here at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

"Approximately three quarters of women with breast cancer are candidates for lumpectomy, rather than mastectomy," Dr. Jayaant Vaidya, a surgeon at the British school, said.

"But because lumpectomy typically involves daily radiation treatment for an extended period of time, and mastectomy typically does not require radiation therapy, women sometimes choose mastectomy," Dr. Vaidya noted. "If this new technique is proved effective, it should make lumpectomy available to many more patients," he added. "Early tests are promising."

Dr. Jeffrey Tobias, a tumor specialist at the school, said: "We believe this is going to work. Most cancer recurrences occur immediately adjacent to the tumor–an area which receives radiation with this method."

A metallic ball, which is placed into the area where the tumor was removed, is charged by an electron generator. It then emits a dose of ionizing radiation lasting from 21 to 28 minutes.

The technique is not indicated for lobular carcinoma, which accounts for up to 15% of all breast cancers. Dr. Vaidya said patients with lobular carcinoma still need an extended period of radiation, but the radiating sphere can be used initially.
