אלפי רופאים קוראים לכתב העת The Lancet שלא לפרסם מכתב המבקר את התנהלות ישראל בעזה

למעלה מ-47,000 רופאים חתמו עד כה על מכתב הנשלח למערכת כתב העת The Lancet, הקורא שלא לפרסם מכתב אחר שנודע שנשלח למערכת, המבקר את התנהגות ישראל כמדינה לא הומניטרית. במכתבם, כותבים יוזמי מכתב הנגד (מכתב התמיכה בישראל), כי “לא יתכן כי מכתב הקורא לשמירת זכויות אדם לא קורא להסרת שלטון החמאס, ארגון טרור הקורא להשמדת ישראל, המשתמש בפלסטינים כמגינים אנושיים והופך ציוד הנאסף כעזרה הומניטרית לבסיס לפעילות טרור ונשק”. בנוסף, כותבים במכתב הנגד כי המכתב המקורי כולל מידע שגוי על המלחמה, למשל את הטענה שישראל הפציצה בית החולים בעזה, ולא מזכיר את החטופים בשבי החמאס, או את ארגון הטרור בכלל. 

לדבריהם, טיוטה של המכתב ועליה למעלה מ-40 אלף חתימות נשלחה ללאנצט כבר ב- 25/10, בעקבותיה התקבלה הבהרה מכתב העת כי המכתב המקורי לא התקבל ושאין כוונה לפרסם אותו.

יוזמי מכתב הנגד, רופאים ורופאות מאוסטרליה, מעדכנים בטופס הגוגל בו נאספות החתימות כי הם ממשיכים לאסוף חתימות של רופאים בעולם על מכתב הנגד. לדבריהם, נודע להם שהמכתב שיועד לכתב העת לא פורסם, אך שנשלח לכתב עת אחר. לדבריהם, הם יעדכנו ויגיבו בהתאם לכל מכתב הקורא לזכויות הומניטריות אך משמיט את הדרישה לשחרור החטופים ולא מזכיר את החמאס. הם עומלים כעת על העברת החתימות שנשלחו אליהם למסמך שיוצג אונליין. 

על המכתב המקורי, המגנה את ישראל, חתומים למעלה מ-2600 רופאים. המכתב קורא בין השאר להפסקת נשק ופתיחת מסדרון להעברת עזרה הומניטרית לעזה, אך לא מזכיר בקריאתו בקשה להחזרת החטופים הישראלים השבויים בעזה. בנוסף, קורא המכתב המקורי לחקור פשעי מלחמה לכאורה, ובהקשר לקריאה זו מזכיר את הפגיעה בבית החולים שנפגע בעזה.

We are aware of a commentary that has been submitted, and even tentatively accepted, for publication in your highly regarded journal, The Lancet. The commentary is titled, ‘Call to Action: An Open Letter from Global Health Professionals’ and is dated October 20th, 2023, and to date has over 1000 signatures:

We would implore your editorial committee to consider the appropriateness of your medical journal publishing this commentary. This letter purports to be a call for humanitarian rights, and while this may be its genuine intention, it contains and perpetuates misinformation with one-sided views. It contains context and history about the Arab Israeli conflict that are biased and incomplete, and largely includes opinion rather than evidence-based references.
For example, it calls for investigation into war crimes “including the reported bombing of the Al Ahli hospital” which serves to perpetuate Hamas’ lies that the explosion at the hospital was an intentional act by Israel when there is now information from multiple sources that this was a misfired rocket launched from a cemetery by Islamic Jihad. Such misinformation breeds hatred and incites violence.

How is it that a letter advocating for human rights does not call for the removal of Hamas from Gazan leadership? Hamas is a recognised terrorist organisation with links to ISIS, whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel, whose modus operandi is to use innocent Palestinians as human shields and to divert humanitarian aid and resources into terrorist infrastructure and weaponry.

It is deplorable that a letter written in the name of human rights and dignity only added a call for release of hostages as an “addendum”, and then deliberately chose to omit that call due to “debate and feedback from the health community”. What is there to debate? Israeli civilians including babies, children, women, and elderly were savagely torn from their homes, ripped away from their families, many bearing witness to the rape and death of their loved ones.  How in good conscience, can a health professional call themselves humanitarian and choose not to demand the release of innocent people?
We absolutely call for the rights and dignity of all people to be upheld. Our common fight must be against terror and terrorism, and against misinformation and incitement of hatred. We do not believe that these aims are achieved by the commentary ‘Call to Action: An Open Letter from Global Health Professionals’ and again, we implore you to re-consider its publication.
