Indomethacin is more effective than meloxicam as prophylaxis of heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty, German research indicates.
Investigators from Julius Maximilians University in Wurzburg compared use of the two drugs in 272 patients following total hip arthroplasty. They report that 25% of patients treated with meloxicam developed heterotopic ossification. This compared to 10% of patients assigned to indomethacin. The difference is statistically significant, the researchers note.
Beginning the day after surgery, patients were randomised to receive 7.5 milligrams per day of meloxicam, 15 mg/d meloxicam or 50 mg indomethacin twice a day. Therapy lasted 14 days.
