Nephropathy is less likely to develop in high-risk angiography patients if iodixanol rather than a low-osmolar, nonionic contrast medium is used.
This is the finding of a multi-centre European study led by Dr Peter Aspelin from Huddinge University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden for the NEPHRIC Study Investigators.
High-risk patients undergoing angiography are susceptible to nephrotoxic effects. This randomised, double-blind, prospective study was prompted by the question of whether this iso-osmolar contrast medium might be less nephrotoxic than the low-osmolar medium.
