In heart failure patients, an abnormal increase in ventilation levels is seen during exercise. Treatment with the beta-blocker carvedilol appears to reduce these inappropriately elevated levels, according to a recent report.
Dr. Piergiuseppe Agostoni and colleagues, from the Universita di Milano in Italy, assessed the quality-of-life and respiratory outcomes of 15 patients with chronic heart failure who were treated with placebo for 2 months and with carvedilol for 4 months. The researchers found that treatment with
