Therapy Targeting Endotoxin May Benefit Patients With Heart Failure


European investigators have shown that concentrations of endotoxin typically found in heart failure patients stimulate production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha. They suggest that therapeutic approaches that target endotoxin signaling may be of benefit in patients with heart failure.

According to Dr. Sabine Genth-Zotz, of the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, and colleagues, previous studies of the relationship between endotoxin and cytokine production have used concentrations of endotoxin far greater than that observed in patients. They note that theirs is the first study to evaluate levels of endotoxin seen in vivo, “typically around 0.6 EU/mL.”
