Natalizumab Improves Quality of Life and Remission Rates in Crohn’s Disease Patients

Patients with active Crohn’s disease show some significant improvements after treatment with the selective adhesion-molecule inhibitor natalizumab.

This drug increased rates of clinical remission and response, improved quality of life and C-reactive protein levels and was also well tolerated by patients in a multicentre trial for the Natalizumab Pan-European Study Group.

 In Crohn’s disease and similar chronic inflammatory conditions, the migration of leukocytes from the circulation into the parenchyma and their activation within inflammatory sites are mediated in part by 4 integrins.

 Natalizumab is a 4 integrin-specific humanized monoclonal antibody. Investigators led by Dr. Subrata Ghosh from Western General Hospital, in Edinburgh, Scotland, did a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the drug in 248 patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease.
