Brain Abnormalities on MRI Seen After Coronary Bypass Surgery


After coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), abnormalities on MRI of the brain suggesting small embolic infarcts can occur, even in patients without overt neurological defects, Johns Hopkins University researchers report.

Dr. Lucas Restrepo and colleagues from Baltimore performed perfusion-weighted and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (PWI and DWI) of the brain before and after CABG in 13 patients. The patients also took a battery of neurocognitive tests before and after the procedure, according to the report in the December issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.
