Ambulatory Blood Pressure Predictive of Severity of Hypertensive Disease


In addition to being the best method for diagnosing hypertension, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is also predictive of the severity and prognosis of hypertensive disease, Austrian researchers report.

Dr. Michael M. Hirschl and colleagues from the University of Vienna compared clinic blood pressure and ambulatory blood pressure, taken every 15 minutes during the daytime and every 30 minutes at night using an oscillometric device, in 736 hypertensive patients. The goal of the study was to define the stages of hypertension using ambulatory blood pressure and to evaluate the prognostic impact of these stages compared with clinic blood pressure.
