Increased levels of homocysteine are associated with sudden death without acute coronary thrombosis in men, especially in those diabetics with lipid-poor, fibrous plaques, researchers report.
Dr. Renu Virmani from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington DC, and colleagues obtained homocysteine levels at postmortem from 87 men with coronary thrombosis, 62 of whom had acute thrombus. They also obtained samples from 35 men with severe coronary disease without thrombus and from 46 controls.
