Antireflux Surgery Riskier Than Indicated by Case Series

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Dec 26 – Findings from a new study using national data indicate that the morbidity and mortality of antireflux surgery in the US during the 1990s was quite low, but still slightly higher than typically reported in case series. Furthermore, the risk of adverse outcomes is inversely related to surgeon experience.

Dr. David R. Flum and colleagues, from the University of Washington in Seattle, analyzed data from two population-based cohort studies to determine the risks of antireflux surgery performed in the US between 1992 and 1997.
