Pharmacist-Compounded Injectable Steroids Potential Source of Infection

Federal health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) want physicians to be aware that medications prepared by a compounding pharmacy may be a source of infection in patients receiving epidural or intra-articular injections.

In the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report December 13th, Dr. Dan Jernigan, medical epidemiologist at CDC and colleagues describe 5 cases of fungal infection due to Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis associated with contaminated injectable methylprednisolone prepared at a compounding pharmacy in North Carolina.

On-site investigation of the pharmacy revealed “several instances of nonadherence to sterile technique,” the CDC reports. Four of the patients developed E. dermatitidis meningitis and one died, while another developed E. dermatitidis sacroiliitis.
