Leg Amputation And Reconstruction Have Similar Outcomes

Limb reconstruction after severe trauma typically achieves health and other functional results equivalent after two years to those of amputation.

 This is the finding of a multicentre study in the United States led by Dr Michael J Bosse from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, North Carolina. In many centres, limb salvage for severe trauma has replaced amputation as the primary treatment.

 However, long-term outcomes after these procedures have not been fully evaluated. Also, in the wake of contradictory findings from smaller retrospective studies, some investigators have suggested functional outcome after reconstruction is poorer than after amputation. This prospective observational study was done in a large cohort of patients from eight level-one trauma centres. Objective was to determine functional outcomes of 569 patients with severe leg injuries resulting in either reconstruction or amputation
