Researchers from Texas have identified some guanine-nucleotide analogs that stop human tumor cells from producing parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP)–a molecule that promotes bone breakdown.
When these analogs were tested in a murine model of metastatic human breast cancer, a reduction in osteolytic lesions was observed. Also, treatment of mice carrying human lung cancer cells reduced the degree of hypercalcemia present.
