Breastfeeding Does Not Protect Against Infant Colic

Breastfeeding does not have a protective effect on the development of infant colic, Canadian researchers report.

They failed to document any relationship between the source of early infant nutrition and colic’s development in a prospective cohort study of 856 mother-infant dyads. “The absence of a protective effect of breastfeeding on colic’s development is robust across time, geography and study design,” say investigators led by Dr. Tammy Clifford of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

 “These observations lend support to the belief that organic causes (such as protein intolerance) are responsible for only a small subgroup of cases of colic.” The researchers concluded that while colic was statistically associated with several variables, including pre-existing maternal anxiety, much of the condition’s aetiology remains unexplained.
